The driving and road conditions in the summer are a lot different compared to winter, and due to the increasing popularity of UK summer holidays road trips can often be a lot longer. These factors can impact a vehicles performance, RAC call outs increase by 20% in the summer months and although many of these breakdowns can’t be avoided, these helpful tips can keep your car on the road for longer.

Things you can check yourself regularly:
– wear and/or splitting of wiper blades
– screenwash levels
– oil levels with the use of a dipstick and following the instructions in the owner’s manual
– coolant levels following the instructions in the owner’s manual
– the electric cooling fan – run the engine until it’s up to temperature and listen for the fan switching on
– all exterior and interior lights
– tyre condition (inc. the spare) for correct pressures and legal tread depth – the current minimum legal tread depth for cars is 1.6mm
– jack and wheel brace – make sure they’re in good working order.

When preparing to travel long distances:
– Plan your journey to avoid getting lost or getting stuck in traffic jams, use a Sat Nav if possible when travelling to a new place
– Ensure you have plenty of water and refreshments
– Take plenty of breaks, research service stations along the way
– If you have children, take something to entertain them. Bored kids make for a stressful journey.
– Get plenty of rest before travelling.
